Music in the Church

It kills me that a fake language in a made-up world within a video game more successfully uses the beauty of polyphony and chant than most of the music in modern hymnals today.

This video with its 114 voices was sung by one person. The music is stirring and beautiful. Now imagine what our liturgies would sound like if we had this much enthusiasm and creativity using the great heritage of music that has come from the Church! The tools are all there, we just need to take advantage of them.

I imagine your choir director would be excited to hear your desire for great music, especially if you contribute the gift of your voice to the choir.

Peace,

One Response to Music in the Church

    Could not agree more!

I can’t sing worth beans, but a very smart person once told me that chant was music designed for people who can’t sing very well. For several years at Saint Patrick’s, a small group of us Benedictine oblates chanted Sunday vespers using the Mundelein Psalter.

We weren’t great to listen to, but it was amazingly prayerful and moving. It would be great if there were more of it!
